I believe God gives us each "talents" to use for His kingdom. Some are good children's ministers, others music, and some great Bible knowledge. If we use our "talents" the way God wants us to we can do great things. I think too many people distort this though. They claim to be prophets or that they can speak tongues and that God has given them the power. Most likely they are just trying to push their own ways on people and not Gods ways.
Amen to that. Just because people have abused them doesn't mean they are not valid today. I definitely believe that the gifts are for the uplifting of the Body, but most important is one's walk in the Spirit, which produces the FRUIT of the Spirit. Without Love, the beginning of the fruit, all else is null and void (cf. 1 Corinthians 12-14).The Holy Spirit is the Great Comforter that God sent to us after Jesus ascended to Heaven, in order to fill our lives and be the spritual embodiment of Jesus. It is through the Holy Spirit that we are able to take Jesus into our hearts where He can live until He returns for us.
Spiritual gifts are listed in the Bible in the New Testament. We each have at least one; some have more than one. God gives us what He knows we can do IF we leave it to Him. I have seen many false prophets/evangelists, etc., who claim to have these gifts; but if they do at all, they pervert them for their own glory. When this occurs, many times God takes away what He gave.
We must be very careful how we use our gifts. We can help or hurt others and ourselves with them, and if we hurt, then we damage our relationship with God, as well as causing others harm spiritually, physically, mentally and emotionally. We carry responsibility that comes with each gift. If we leave it up to God to guide us, that responsibility rests with Him. If we abuse it/them, then it falls on us. So always, I repeat, ALWAYS take it to God before you use your gift(s). But do not hesitate to use them when He says. I guess it is all about discernment, which I believe comes with each gift when led by God.
